6/6 – 6/12 Children’s Book of the Week: Helga’s Dowry

Helga’s Dowry – A Troll Love Story
by Tomie dePaola
Helga’s the loveliest troll in the three parishes, but her troll sweetie, Lars, cannot marry her because she’s also the poorest, and has no dowry. Without batting an eyelash, Helga rolls up her sleeves and gets to work on earning herself a dowry. Hard work, brains, and a little troll magic get her there, but the troll Lars decided to marry instead, the very wealthy and mean-spirited Inge, tries to sabotage her along the way! With her perseverence and wit, Helga manages to outsmart Inge, but her hard work and Lar’s shallow priorities make her realize that she is worth more than the money she earned.

A creative, smart story with wonderful illustrations. Best for ages 5-8.

2/28: Children’s Book of the Week; A Bad Case of Stripes

A Bad Case of Stripes
by David Shannon
Camilla Cream loves lima beans…but she’ll turn every color in the rainbow before she lets anyone find out! In this beautifully bizarre story, Camilla wakes up one morning to find herself covered head-to-toe with rainbow stripes! But the colors won’t stop there. Camilla’s new look can change at the drop of a hat—into whatever people around her want it to be! Her parents bring in Doctors, Specialists, and Experts, but no-one knows why Camilla’s changing colors. Ultimately, Camilla must learn that what other people would like her to be isn’t half as important as who she really is.

A beautiful story about self-confidence and *ahem* showing one’s true colors. Love it!
