6/20 – 6/26: Children’s Book of the Week; A Promise is a Promise

A Promise is a Promise
by Robert Munsch and Michael Kusugak
illustrated by Vladyana Krykorka
Allashua and her family live surrounded by cold, everything frozen and quiet. Allashua’s parents warn her not to take the harsh winter lightly: the Qallupilluit, witch-like trolls that live under the ice, steal away children who some too close to the cracked ice on their own. Allashua ignores this warning, going off the fish in the cracks in the ice by herself – but not without insulting the Qallupilluit, who probably don’t exist – first. The Qallupilluit drag Allashua down with them under the ice, allowing her to leave only when she promises to bring her brothers and sisters to the ice, too.

“A promise is a promise”

The Qallupilluit remind her, and her parents agree. But can Allashua, her parents and siblings, stay together without breaking the promise? They can, and Allashua learns both the power of a promise, and the importance of family.
